The Gloves
I have to take a moment here to introduce my gloves. When I bought the ticket for this show and saw how unbelievably close to the stage I was going to be, I decided I had to do something to try to get JY's attention. There are always tons of "I love you Tommy" signs, and I figured JY deserved some equal time. The idea of making a sign didn't really appeal to me. I've never taken a sign into a concert because I've never been close enough to have a snowball's chance of the band reading it, so I didn't know if the security staff ever gives people any trouble about them, and I didn't want to have to deal with that. Besides, I didn't want to have to carry the thing around.
So the idea I came up with was gloves that would read "JY" - a "J" on the right palm and "Y" on the left. (Also "J" on the back of the left glove and "Y" on the back of the right - people behind me might as well see too!) After giving some thought to a color scheme, I decided I wanted yellow gloves with red letters. Who knew you can't really buy yellow gloves? So I started with white gloves and dyed them bright yellow, then cut the letters out of shiny, spangly red material and sewed them on to the gloves, front and back. I was really happy with how the gloves came out; they are a tacky, gaudy work of art. In addition I must say they held up very well with all the clapping I did - I only lost one little red sparkle off of the "Y" on the left hand!
While the stage crew was finishing up, I swapped out my cameras so that the fresh one was ready, then I decided it was time to put on my gloves. For one thing, I didn't want to be worried about trying to dig my gloves out of my bag when the show started, but also, I was cold! I had forgotten how cool it could get in the evening here, and hadn't brought a jacket. The gloves ended up being practical as well as extremely fashionable! Mark and Dawn saw me putting on the gloves - the bright yellow and flashy red were pretty hard to miss! They gave me a couple of suspicious smiles but didn’t actually ask what the gloves were all about, so when I got both gloves on I held up my hands for them to see. Dawn laughed when she saw the big sparkly red letters, and said "They say JY! I love it!" Everyone seemed to think they were pretty cool, and I was just glad no one said they were the stupidest things they'd ever seen! And besides… my hands WERE cold! When I was choosing the gloves, I was looking for light material that would breathe so I wouldn't get uncomfortable wearing them and want to take them off. Then I finally said who cares, I want them to look as good as possible, and chose the gloves that I thought would look the best. They turned out to be very comfortable too though!
