Fooling Yourself
During the intro to "Fooling Yourself", I took out my camera and took some pictures of Tommy standing center stage under the spotlight. He did hold up the guitar, but didn't do his spin, for those who keep track of those things. During the final section of the song, Lawrence began by clapping along with Tommy in 6/8 time, then turned to his keyboard and took over. JY stole Lawrence's piano stool and put it back next to Todd's drum riser, then sat down and spun around a few times. I don't know how he did that without getting dizzy, but he was perfectly sure-footed when he got up. He ran up to the front of the stage and he, Glen and Tommy formed their guitar trio, proving that you can bang your head to ANY song if you have the will!
Next was "Brave New World." This song sounds really wonderful live and it was nice to hear how many people in the audience sang along. The harmonies are incredible, and when you break them down, they are beautifully complex. Ever since I heard them sing this song on the Rockline radio show and heard exactly what JY's harmony line is, I always hear JY's voice shine through in the chorus of this song. As I mentioned, I was right next to the tower of speakers, and when "my spot" of the stage was vacant and I turned my head to look at the rest of the stage, my ear was in direct line of the sound. This created a very unusual effect since I was watching JY singing directly ahead of me but clearly hearing his voice from my left. Of course that was happening all evening, but in my mind it was more noticeable in this song only because my focus was involuntarily drawn to one person out of a group both by sight and by sound, but in two different directions. It's difficult to describe but it was a remarkable sensory experience that swirled around me and made a strong impression. A transporting moment in an evening that was only getting better and better!
