It's a party!
You may be wondering if anything non-undergarment-related happened all evening! Of course it did - above and beyond that, the show was a blast! Tommy asked us at one point if this was a concert or a party - he knew already, but we confirmed it for him, this was a party! So he said, "We're going to play a concert in the middle of the party!" Works for me!
There were other fun moments too - I love watching the things that happen on the "fringes," not necessarily in the center of attention. For instance, during the first line of "Renegade," while Tommy was in the spotlight, Glen was in the dark in front of me, just dancing all around and jumping up and down. But moments later, when the spotlight hit Glen - arms over his head, suddenly all serious and singing. He doesn't fool me.
Another funny thing was the "UNH" stickers. Let's see if I can make this a short story. You know the sound effects Lawrence produces during his piano solo before "Lady"? Well, I know several devoted Lawrence fans, and back in March, I got a phone call from a bunch of giddy women in Florida on a Styx road trip, and as soon as I said "Hello?" I was answered back with "How do you spell UNH?" To get the effect, don't say the letters, just try and pronounce it. Well, I live in New Hampshire in between Styx shows, and after that call, when I saw bumper stickers and whatnot for the University of New Hampshire - UNH - I'd always hear Lawrence going "UNH!" So I was ordered to find some of those stickers to bring to the show, but I couldn't find any, until the morning I was traveling. I went into the gift shop in the airport for quite another reason, but then turned and saw in a rack on the wall, big as life - UNH! I gasped so loudly I scared three other people into leaving the shop immediately. But I bought six UNH stickers to pass around. So tonight, during the piano solo, a bunch of my friends were in front of Lawrence holding up those UNH signs! When he finally opened his eyes and saw them, I saw him read them letter by letter - U, N, H - and then laugh and say "I don't get it." Kelly will have to explain that to him next time she sees him!
